Synopsis
Ever wonder what would happen if you took Bram Stoker’s legendary vampire tale and put it into a blender with Mel Brooks, Monty Python and The 39 Steps? That’s just what happens in this lightning-fast, laugh-out-loud, gender-bending romp. When her sister Mina falls ill with a mysterious disease of the blood, Lucy Westfeldt and her fiancé, Jonathan Harker, enlist the help of famed female vampire hunter Dr Jean Van Helsing. Their hunt for the dangerous and sexy Count Dracula abounds with clever wordplay and quick-change antics in a blood-curdlingly hilarious send-up of this literary classic.
Characters
Dracula: Magnetic, sexy, rockstar presence. He is a narcissist whose greatest love is himself – and his leather pants. Bored with women falling all over him, he becomes obsessed with Lucy when he hears of her strength and adventurousness. The less she needs him, the more interested he is. He travels to Whitby to find her and make her his bride for eternity. Commanding European accent.
Jonathan Harker: Prim and proper and obsessive-compulsive real estate agent, frightened of his own shadow. Engaged to his childhood crush Lucy Westfeldt and enamored of her fearlessness. Once bitten he loosens up … a lot … and becomes a Tom Jones-style rock star in leather pants. RP British accent.
Lucy Westfeldt: Brilliant, plucky earth scientist daughter of Dr Westfeldt, she is full of energy and the spirit of adventure and often underestimated because of her beauty. Engaged to Jonathan, but when Dracula moves to Whitby, she is curious about his strange ways and impressed by their similar interests. RP British accent.
Mina Westfeldt: The less attractive, less intelligent Westfeldt daughter, she lives in her sister Lucy’s shadow and is desperate for attention. She is immediately (and pathetically) receptive to Dracula’s charms. RP British accent.
Dr Wallace Westfeldt: Lucy and Mina’s father, a blowhard, self-important misogynist given to proclamations and posturing with his pipe. A doctor caring for the criminally insane, he has recently lost his wife to consumption. RP British accent.
Dr Van Helsing: Brilliant and sturdy German vampire-hunting doctor from the University of Schmutz. Deadly serious in the way Germans can be, she is accustomed to people not believing she is a real doctor. Strong, shmart, unt bold, she is a woman of action. German accent a la Mel Brooks.
Renfield: Insane patient of Dr Westfeldt who lives to serve and loves to eat bugs, In a word, the dude is nuts. Cockney accent and salivary issues.
Kitty Rutherford: A dotty kleptomaniac patient of Dr Westfeldt, she serves as a maid in his house. Think Mrs Lovett but servile and easily distracted. Cockney accent.
Lord Cavendish: Lucy’s suitor; a Scottish dolt. Scottish accent.
Lord Worthington: Lucy’s suitor; posh, British and petulant. RP British accent.
Lord Havemercy: Lucy’s arrogant suitor from Memphis, a la Yosemite Sam. Texas accent.
Driver: The Transylvanian driver of the carriage taking Jonathan to Dracula’s castle who tries to warn him. Borat meets Boris and Natasha. Eastern European or Russian accent.
Captain: The salty captain of a doomed ship caught in a raging storm. Sea Captain accent.
Bosun: A scurvy seaman who goes down with the ship in a storm. Irish accent.
Gravedigger: A drunk gravedigger with a secret. Cockney accent.
A note on casting:
The play is written in a style that allows characters to be played by actors of any gender, ethnicity, age or type.
Characters are intended to be doubled - the usual breakdown of roles is:
- Actor One – Harker/Cavendish/Worthington/Havemercy/Bosun/Gravedigger
- Actor Two – Dr Westfeldt/Renfield/Captain/Man-eating wolf
- Actor Three – Lucy/Kitty/Driver/ Man-eating wolf
- Actor Four – Mina/Van Helsing/Man-eating wolf
- Actor Five – Dracula
We’re seeking actors who:
- can approximate a variety of accents (eg English, Scottish, Irish, German, Texan)
- are playful and highly collaborative, with good comic timing
- can portray multiple characters with clear physical and vocal distinctions.
Audition requirements
Auditions will be relaxed, fun, and designed to give everyone the opportunity to showcase their comedic instincts and character work. Please prepare a short (1-3 mins) comedic monologue – this can be contemporary or classic. You’ll also be asked to read sections of the play, so please be familiar with the script and the character(s) you’re interested in.
Rehearsal information
Rehearsals will begin in mid- or late September. You must be available for production week: 14 – 19 November.
